You can simply say 'jinsei wa tada no yume desu' [lit : Life is just a dream]. If you want it more precise (as in with more emphasis on but) you could say 'jinsei wa hon no yume ni suginai' [lit : Life is no more than a mere dream/ Life is nothing but a dream].

To render the tone of it more formal, in the first sentence you can add 'de ari' (much more suitable than 'de aru' in here) instead of 'desu'; and in the second one you can end it with 'sugimasen' instead of 'suginai'.
