The poem, Desiderata, which is Latin for 'things to be desired' was originally composed by English Poet and lawyer, Max Ehrmann 1872 - 1945AD. On his death, the poem was found among his personal papers and although it was widely circulated during the late 1960s - early 1970s, and was said to have been found written on the walls of an old church (Saint Paul's, Baltimore, Maryland) 'author unknown', is actually protected by copyright (circa 1927) in Ehrmann's estate. Personal note: Many times I was requested to write this poem in calligraphic writing and did so with a footnote, "anonymous". I and other calligraphers were warned to seek permission from those handling Ehrmann's estate so that we would not breach copyright. A Spanish Poem....
First I would read the poem to My friends. then I would ask them questions like "What did they like about your poem?" "How did your poem make them feel?" "Can you relate to My Poem?" " Is there anything they didn't understand?" " what would they do to improve your poem if anything, and Why?"
I believe the poem is trying to say that even though there is bad in the world, we as humans have a choice as to whether we want to allow that to affect our pursuit of happiness. Appreciate life for what it is, but you have to determine that for yourself. Basically, the poem can be summed up in the last three lines" "it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy." These statements, however simple, are very profound. And frankly, they are principals many individuals forget in a modern world.
Desiderata is pretty self-explanatory. It is written in good, clear English and contains no ambiguous or metaphorical phrases that might be open to interpretation. Read it, absorb it and live by it. It makes sense.
