It really depends on the college or university your applying to, the number of applicants, your academic background, etc. You would think that with the drastic shortage of nurses today that schools would be fairly open. However, there are reasons why they are not. First, some schools may have difficulty finding enough instructors, they may not have enough accommodations in terms of classroom space, laboratories, etc. One thing remains, the program is competitive. Yet, in comparison to the number of individuals who enter this program, very few actually graduate because of the intensity of the program. Too many students take on too much too soon, and for the wrong reasons.

OK, my first recommendation is, never, never, consider yourself as average. If you have a real passion for the field you will do everything you can to accomplish your goals. If you keep limiting yourself it will turn into a self fulfilling prophecy, and that's what you will be. Remember this, you need a little bit of brain power, but a whole lot of heart. It's 10% aptitude, 90% attitude. Attitude is everything! If you have the right attitude, you can do anything you put your mind to. The next thing is to complete all of the critical science courses first, so that when you enter the professional phase of the program, you will be able to concentrate on nursing and just nursing. These courses will include the following. Keep in mind, the following courses may vary slightly from school to school.

* anatomy and physiology I & II * microbiology * inorganic, organic and biochemistry The above courses will give you a taste of the program intensity you will be in for once you start the professional phase.

So, do not think of it in terms of difficulty, just do it! If the passion is there, you will be successful.
