This probably refers to a GPA. The most common scale in the US is the 4 point scale, where an A is worth 4 points, a B is worth 3 and so on. a 2.89 would be a B- average on this scale.

However, there are a number of other GPA scales that are commonly used. Without knowing the scale, the number is useless.

It would be considered above average particular to the courses completed. You have to remember, the GPA is based on the grades you received in the courses you have completed. It is not based on your intelligence, or your potential. You have the ability to obtain A work. Still, some of it depends on your motivation, perseverance, attitude, your seeking help when needed, etc. In addition, some of it depends on the professor, the intensity of the course, the type of testing etc. Just do the best you can, and the grades will take care of themselves. Seek knowledge, not grades, and you will see a positive difference.
