It's not that one is better than the other, it's just a different approach to patient care. Both are equivalent.

Certainly most DOs would rather have the MD title. The DO took the MCAT and the college credits and did well and could most likely get into a DO or MD school, but got into a DO school and, thus, now has to have the DO title. With all the Carribean MD schools and worldwide MD is known as medical doctors, it would be best if the DO would change its title to MD,DO (Medical Doctor, Diplomate of Osteopathy). The old aging banal dumb asses in the AOA don't want to change this DO degree to MD,DO. They should, especially with the new rising of the mid level Nurse Practioner to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). These DNPs are going to dominate in the future and have their own practices with full prescribing rights to all meds, including narcotics. If the DOs don't change their title in MD,DO, these DNPs are going to be a major competitor in the marketplace.
MD stands for Medical Doctor. doctors want people to now what type of doctor they are and what "level".
