Negotiation can be considered an art or a science. Good negotiating requires skill in that area, this is something many people have a hard time mastering.
One of the basics of the art of negotiation is to never settle for the first offer. Accepting the first offer implies that what you're bartering has no value, and that you're a pushover.
It is an art as it can not be a science.
