This is the easiest thing in the world; writing on no topic at all is a blank check. Writing should take a life of its own. When I was teaching, I used to give my students an assignment similar to this question. When they entered the room, I had a message written on the board for them to take their seats silently. I had a slide on the overhead that read:

"You will have five minutes to answer the following question. Before you begin, you will be permitted five minutes to consider your answer. During the ten minutes, you will not be permitted to speak to the other students, or to ask questions. The time begins when I uncover the topic.

The topic is...

How would you answer this question?"

Without fail, the first time my students saw this, it drove them insane (metaphorically speaking). They gave a variety of responses, from writing nothing more than their names, to repeating the same words over and over on the paper. They were all surprised when they earned full credit for doing nothing more than turning in a page with their name on it.

Part of my goal in giving this assignment was to communicate that it doesn't matter to anyone but the writer what he writes about until it is written. That it is the job of the writer to make it important to the reader. If what the writer produces is important to the writer, it will be important to someone who reads it--often to most people who read it.

I gave this assignment twice a year: once on the first day the students began writing, and as the last assignment in the class. The final assignment results were in all cases vastly different than my students' first products. Where with the first assignment some were practically in tears from boredom or frustration, with the last assignment they were begging me to extend the time they were given to write.

There are 319 words in this answer, not counting this last sentence, and it took approximately seven minutes to write, counting editing.

A total of 150 words would make 2 to 4 very short paragraphs (a long paragraph could be 300 words!). For an 8th grader, this is very do-able in one night... you should be able to write it in less than an hour, really. Just think of your topic and imagine 'telling' a friend... and write what you would say if you were talking.
