Japanese children attend school at as young as 3 years old (Kindergarten). They start actual school at 6 years old elementary They then move on to Middle school/lower secondary school at the age of 12. The next step is then high school/ upper secondary school which is attended at the age of 15. Teenagers then finish the road of education at University at 18. Children in Japan, can, overall spend up to 16 years at school plus 3 at Kindergarten!!! School days (elementary and middle school) generally go from 8:30 to 3:00 (Monday-Friday) but some students do after school activities and stay until around 5:00pm!!! On a rare occasion some students go home after lunch (which is before recess). Some afternoon classes begin after cleaning the classes which generally takes around 20 mins/recess!!! The basic school year involves 3 semesters separated by 4 terms! Japanese Public schools are closed on National holidays, Saturdays and Sundays!!! The summer vacation goes for 40 days from July 20th to August 31rd. The Winter goes for 10 days from December 26th to January 6th. The Spring Holidays go for 10 days from March 25th to April 5th. The new school year starts in April at the end of spring vacation.
