The question should be answered with the applicant's desired career field, and what type of job he hopes to get within the field (research, marketing, management). The degree being sought at the college or school should be shown as important to obtaining the information and skills that would be used in that job.

For example : Someone who wants to be an industrial research chemist would list this, and indicate how a knowledge of theoretical and applied chemistry would be necessary to understand and use the processes involved in the job. A master's degree in chemical processing would allow him to operate and manage a large industrial research facility.

It is okay not to have clear career goals when entering college. College is a time of discovery. However, you should have an idea of where you might see yourself upon exiting college.
