The Spanish Language came to Puerto Rico via colonization from Spain. Once the Spaniards invaded the island, it's people became subjects of the King and Queen of Spain. Spanish therefore became the official language. For over four hundred years the Spaniards immigrated to Puerto Rico to the point that today over 70% of Puerto Ricans can trace European ancestry. While the Spanish language has retained some Taino and African words in Puerto Rico the major influences to Puerto Rican Spanish are the accents from Andalusia and the Canary islands in the south of Spain.
* Language: Spanish is PR's native tongue, Portuguese is Brazil's native tongue
Both Spanish and English are the official languages of Puerto Rico. However because of Puerto Rico's Spanish Background and the fact it is a self-governing territory of the U.S, English is less widely spoken but the majority of the population are quite fluent in both. It is taught in all the schools as a major second language. Around 90% of all people in Puerto Rico speak both English and Spanish. For Spanish only, almost 100%. But for English only about 2%.
Puerto Rico has three options on it's political status. Statehood, Commonwealth (Current), and Independence from the United States. The topic is very debated on the island as there are three political parties and each one has it's ideology. Also, Puerto Rico is a Spanish-speaking commonwealth/nation, and Puerto Ricans are very proud of their language because Puerto Rico speaks its own language called Puerto Rican Spanish which is different from Spaniard Spanish or Mexican Spanish. The major political party of Puerto Rico is the People's Democratic Party which seeks to remain a commonwealth. Puerto Ricans will go to vote in November 2012 to see if the current political status will be changed. The last plebiscite was in 1998 and Puerto Ricans voted to remain a commonwealth.
