First, you want to find out what both the state and district writing and language arts standards are for the grade you are teaching. Find out what writing curriculum your school is using as well as what other resources are available. Then evaluate and determine where your students are currently in regards to meeting both the state and district standards. So far you have determined where you want your students to end up and you know what resources you have available to get them there. Now plan out how you are going to get your students writing the way you want them to. Plan… and adjust along the way in order to meet your goals. Remember, in teaching writing to elementary students… if you don't know where you are going you will be on the road to nowhere. Start with the end in mind.
