The national education in China starts at the age of 6. Children go to elementary schools for six years. Then they go to middle schools and then high school, each for three years. This 12-year period is compulsory and mostly free. College and university study last for 4 years and postgraduate education depend on the majors and levels. Before elementary, children often go to kindergarten for three years (from the 3 years old to 6 years old).
If a student doesn't want to go to college or fail to pass the national test, they can choose to attend vocational schools or begin their careers.
