the conventions of the thriller genre are 2 do with sound and editing. eg quick cuts and camera angle changes, music that gives tension and is passy when appropriate. it can b 2 do with lighting, especially the use of shadow. mirrors and stairs are also conventions of thriller movies.

the conventions are what makes the genre what it is suspense, justice, suspects, a detective, etc that is true as a whole, but that is rather vague, which is unfortunately a very apt term for describing the conventions of any and all genres including that of crime fiction. Conventions are constantly being subverted and expanded upon, until such subversion become conventions. These changes generally take place as a whole, very slowly, but there are always pieces which "jut out" as very different to the perceived norm of people. This perceievd norm is essentially the conventions which are implicit, however, very much real in terms of viewing and reading crime fiction. So, as a basic guideline, since there are no true subversions, think of the most cliched recent story now, and compare it with others from this time and context, or others from the very beginnings of crime fiction (eg. Edgar Allen Poe.) Anything that seems out of place from this norm, is essentially subverting a convention in one way or another. For example, regularly one would expect the detective to be male, or at least, that is what people did expect, now female detectives are just as common almost as male, this is subverting a convention, and also, over time has become a convention in its own right.
