What are equivalent degrees to a Ph.D?

There are several degrees above a Ph.D.

Generally, if you see a degree that starts with "D" then a subject, it is called a higher doctorate, such as a D.Litt or D. Law. These are awarded after a lifetime of coursework and real work in the feild. The reason that they are seen as being higher than a Ph.D. is because the look at the research contribution and the practical contribution in the feild.

There is also the Legal SJD. If you are comparing levels, then the J.D. is slightly higher in value than a masters degree and is seen, but some, as slightly lower than a Ph.D. A LLM is the legal masters, most often taken after the J.D., it is ranked slightly above a Ph.D. Finally, the SJD is a full step above that.

Finally, there is a french degree called a habilus or habilis (depending on the school). It is similar to a higher doctorate with a residency in the feild you are studying. I have not found a higher degree than this.

Having four doc/post doc degrees I can tell you while the profesional doctorates are seen as lower than the Ph.D., they are a lot more work to achive, but they are well worth it. If you are thinking of going on to school for a higher degree, I recomend talking to the graduate departments at a couple differnt schools, they can help you find the right higher degree for you.
