What are the advantages and disadvantages of the web in education?

The greatest disadvantage would have to be the unreliable, unchecked nature of the information provided. Anyone can create a website, anyone can put information on it, anyone can answer questions on a forum or a wiki, whether the information provided is correct or not is the sole responsibility of the creator.

Not to mention, some websites aren't updated any longer and their information may be out of date.

Disadvantages of distance learning may be that you don't have the opportunity to talk with the teacher right away. This may happen when you have a problem or don't understand a topic or concept.

Students may easily assume a passive role during the lesson, in a form of dependence on the teacher. Thus, they might become inactive in classes and not being able to assimilate much knowledge.

As time passes by, some might lack behind in their studies and would not be able to reach the necessary level of expertise to pass the exams.

In my opinion, the main disadvantage is that all kinds of information are available, and there's a temptation of not thinking yourself - you can find an answer to any question within two minutes or even less. Very often it leads to plagiarism and brings up a generation of people, who cannot express their own opinion and their thoughts.
