The vacuum brake booster is connected to the engine through a large vacuum hose directly to the intake manifold. The power brake assist is dependent on the engine vacuum to operate, and allows air into the intake manifold whenever you press on the brakes.
A certain amount of increase in engine idle speed is natural when you press the brakes, however, if there is too much idle increase, you may want to have the vacuum booster tested for leaks. The power brake system can still work while there are relatively small leaks in the booster, but if there are leaks now, they will only get worse and can potentially cause problems with the power brake system.
That may not be your problem, but it would be a good idea to have it checked.
low idle and uneven idle
is this happening when car is at idle? the indicators use power so sometimes at idle the amp meter will fluctuate because of this. if this is happening when driving i would have alternator and battery checked
It could be your TPS, throttle positioning sensor. At least, that was the case with my 89 prelude.
Sometimes the Timing belt tensioner will cause a tap or click until the engine is warm.
What causes a car to idle good and run rough when you give it gas?
Vacuum leek
Possibly a stuck or sticking EGR valve.
On most vehicles there is a screw located on the throttle body, it is the idle control. Sometimes it is cover and sometimes not but most times it is recessed. Tightening the screw will cause the idle to drop as it is cutting off the airflow through a secondary passage in the throttle body, loosening the screw will raise the idle allowing for more air to pass. Sometime in warmer or colder weather the airs density can be too high or low for the vehicle to idle properly and this screw must be altered.
the choke is on
A vacuum leak could do that. If the check engine light is or has been on, have the vehicle scanned for codes.
Fast idle motor is not working. This is allowing the idle to fall below the threshold of what it should be when the A/C is on.
