I think you are referring to a 'dynamic' character as opposed to a 'static' one. Dynamic characters grow and change as the story progresses whereas static characters are the ones that stay (sometimes stubbornly) constant.
Main characters are often dynamic, especially when there is a lesson to be learned.

A dynamic character changes or evolves throughout the story based on their experiences, challenges, and interactions. These characters often learn important lessons, develop new perspectives, or undergo significant personal growth.

A character that changes in a story is often referred to as a dynamic or round character. These characters undergo development or transformation throughout the story, whether it's a shift in beliefs, personality, or actions in response to the events they experience. This change is typically essential for character growth and the overall narrative arc of the story.
Homer Barron is a static character (or character who doesn't change throughout the story). Interestingly, Homer is presented as a minor character who plays a major role. Homer never changes and his features are presented directly throughout the story. Homer tends to fade away in the story and is eventually killed, removing him from the story until the end.
Static: not changing throughout the story Dynamic: changes in some way.

A dynamic character is a character who learns things throughout the story, and who changes. A static character is just the opposite; a character whit less traits, and does not change much throughout the story.
A progression chart is the type of graphic organizer that would help you collect sequential information that you could use to track how a character changes throughout a story or to trace a character's actions.
Maleeka is a dynamic character in the story, because she changes throughout the story. At first she hates her skin and later on in the story she ends up being proud of the skin she is in. :)
