What do you do when you have homework overload?

If you really have too much homework to finish in time, show the teacher how much you have gotten done. Then ask if there is any way to have less homework, or to be able to have some time in school to work on it.

I find that if you have too much homework that you should just stop and go for a walk, or go and get some fresh air. (it actually works) or tidy your work space so you feel more relaxed. Don't worry about it.

The best way is to be polite and reasonable - show them your homework in other classes and tell them how long it takes you to do all the work every night. They'll see that you have too much (if it really is too much).

Here's how to prioritize your studies so you don't get overwhelmed:

• Keep an assignment calendar - not on your phone, an actual big calendar with those boxes you can write in! Write down when all of your tests and big projects are due so you can see ahead of time that something's coming up and start working on it a little at a time instead of waiting until the last second to start. Figure out how long it's going to take you to do that science project or book report and mark that on your calendar now!
• Set your schedule - depending on what grade you're in, you'll need a certain amount of time every day to do the work properly. You're the best judge of how long it's really going to take - be honest! - so set aside that much time and don't do anything but schoolwork during that time. Budget extra timefor test studying and projects.
• Work in steps - don't try to do everything all at once - do 20-10 minutes of work, then take 5 minutes off to walk around, get a snack, get some air and exercise and perk your brain up. Then get back to work for another 20-30 minutes. If you've got a really hard assignment, do part of it, then do the easier stuff, then go back to the hard stuff.
• Cut the distractions - this is the biggest time-waster among students! Cut off the cellphone entirely (not even silent because every time it vibrates, you're distracted wondering who it is). Turn off the TV and the internet - even having the internet on in the background of your computer makes you want to check your social media and email! If you like to work with music playing, make it soft, instrumental music only - loud music with strong rhythm and voices has been shown scientifically to be more distracting!
