An applicant has to be female. After that, the admissions committee looks at a wide variety of things including her individual qualities, her intellectual capacity, and potential for achieving at Barnard. And, each applicant is reviewed in the context of her school, community, and individual story.

Take a good core of academic classes in high school and take the most difficult ones you can handle. Build on your strengths but also try to improve your weaknesses. Be involved in school activities but also in activities outside of school and be able to show areas of leadership.
