A healthy release of emotions
Catharsis is the renewal of body and spirit. During greek tragedies, the events that take place are very catharsis for the audience.
Catharsis is an emotional purging; in other words, a release of pent-up negative emotions. This term often relates to tragedy, but I am not sure if you are referring to the tragedies we suffer in our lives, or tragedy as a literary genre.
In most tragedies, the protagonist faces a downfall or misfortune due to their own flaws or mistakes, leading to their inevitable demise or suffering. Tragedies often explore themes of fate, hubris, and the consequences of human actions. They usually end on a somber note, leaving the audience with a sense of catharsis and reflection.

Plays were part of a religious festival. Each day featured a trilogy of tragedies, a satyr play and a comedy. The tragedy trio presented a deep and moving version of the well-known stories with a different spin and message. The satyr play and comedy were part of the 'catharsis' - a mental engagement and cleaning-out process, where the filthy satyr play and the following comedy lightened up the aftermath of the tragedies, and sent the viewers home mentally exhausted and cleansed.
