I hope this helps you. The rooms in the house are lined allegorically representing the stages of life. They are also lined from east to west. But the progression is similar to the stages throughout the day. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west with night symbolizing death. In the story, Prospero and the mysterious guest start in the east progressing through the rooms to the west showing life from birth to death. The clock in the black room shows the final judgement. The ringing of the clock shows the passing of time and what all the guests fear as they fear that room. I couldn't get this to work as a hyperlink so... Go to this site to see where I got the information. http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/poestories/section10.rhtml
