The word kingdom is actually a combination of two words that means, "where the King has dominion". This is what Jesus was telling His disciples when they asked Him to show them how to pray. "Thy Kingdom come" was actually a kind of test to see if they recognized that the King was right there. The question was, how much "dominion" would they allow the King to have in their lives.
The same is true today. In Genesis God said, "Let us make man in our image and in our likeness and let us give him "dominion" over the Earth". This is what some call free will. The question would be if man would return the dominion that God gave to each person back to God through faith in God.
