There is no set temperature for schools to close in the United States. It is a decision each school district makes and they are much more likely to delay the start of school for low temperatures than they are to close schools for a day.
Usually, states do not have a set temperature for closing schools. The decision is made by considering overall conditions and whether the safety of children would be threatened. If you have concerns about school closing due to bitterly cold temperatires, follow the same procedures as you would for snow closings; tune in to your local television and radio stations.

The temperature so rarely reaches a low that warrants closing school in most parts of Kentucky that there are no set temperature guidelines. A decision to close school would be made by the local school district. It is much more likely that school would be delayed an hour or two, rather than called off for an entire day for cold temperatures; however, on the rare occasion that temperatires are expected to be dangerously low and might pose a danger to students, it is likely that schools would be closed. The decision would br made by each school district and school closings would be posted on local television stations, just like they are for snow closings.

In most areas, there are no guidelines for closing schools for hot weather and closing for that cause is unusual. Closing schools for hot weather would be determined by school administrators, who would likely only close schools if the heat caused a real health danger to students.
Most of the time, you will know why a school is closed, whether that is weather, a holiday, or another reason. If a closing is announced on television or radio, the reason for the closing will probably be given. If it is not, you can call the school or central office to find out.
The mayor could be, but usually the officials of the school district make the decision to close schools for weather-related reasons. If it is a permanent closing, the mayor might have some input, but the school officials would make the decision.
