Oceanography is a very large field, and you should decide which aspect of it you are most interested in -- biological oceanography (the species of plants and animals that live in the ocean), chemical oceanography (the chemistry of seawater and how it changes), or physical oceanography (currents and what causes them, sea bed shapes and sedimentation), because that will shape the studies you go into. You can start to work in an oceanographic lab or vessel as an oceanographer typically once you have your Bachelor's (B.Sc.), four years after leaving high school if all goes well. You can work as a lab assistant with only a high school education, but the work is much more interesting with at least a university degree, as you can then contribute directly to the science being done.
