The question as to how to be accepted into Oxford is one which can never be precisely answered, simply because all students have different strengths. There are, however, a few key points in which you must succeed.

  • Top Grades - For British students, you will need at least 8 A or A* grades at GCSE to be considered for a place at Oxford. As long as you meet that requirement, don't worry too much about your GCSE grades; they are largely discounted as long as you have at least the required 8. Similarly, you will want very good AS level results - expect competitors for a place to have 4 strong A grades at AS level, with some science or maths students having 5 or 6.
  • Admissions Test - The majority of courses at the University of Oxford will require admissions tests before you are invited to interview. These include the HAT (History), BMAT (Biomedical Sciences), ELAT (English) and TSA (PPE, Economics and Management etc.). Scoring highly on these tests is what will qualify you for interview - a poor performance on an admissions test (if one in required) will mean that you are not considered any further.
  • Interview - Your interview at Oxford is the key point for your admission for an undergraduate degree. Your interview can be on a range of topics, varying between subject as well as college. You may be asked to provide a piece of written work around which you will have a discussion (similar to an Oxford Tutorial, if you are accepted) or else you may be asked challenging questions or given an unseen source to read.

What tutors are looking for in successful applicants is passion for a subject, an intellectual curiosity and simply the ability to perform to Oxford standard. Does being rejected mean you are not good enough? Certainly not - it just means that the Tutors felt that other students would be better suited to the teaching and examination style of Oxford.
