After the menses end (period stops), hormones again alert the ovaries to a new "cycle". The uterus begins (again) to build a thicker tissue on the walls of the uterus. This tissue is highly vascular, meaning, it's got a lot of blood vessels to transfer nutrients and wastes IF an egg implants during this next cycle. The egg prepares for its release, so the egg enters the Fallopian tube on its journey to the uterus--- but the egg hasn't quite left, yet. It's just getting ready/readier. The biggest thing your body is doing is building the thicker wall inside the uterus. Without that, the egg cannot implant very well. That thickened tissue is what becomes period blood if no egg implants.
