In 1776, Texas was part of the Spanish colonial territory known as New Spain. During this time, the region was largely sparsely populated, with a mix of Indigenous peoples and Spanish settlers. The American Revolution was occurring to the east, inspiring various movements for independence, but Texas remained under Spanish control. Some of the European explorers who visited Utah were Franciscan friars Silvestre Vélez de Escalante and Francisco Atanasio Domínguez in 1776. They were Spanish and came from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Another explorer who visited was the Spanish priest Dominguez in 1776.
