Rutherfordium is the neo-Latin name of an element first detected in 1966 as a result of particle collisions in a nuclear research facility. It is named for the physicist Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). Before 1966 Rutherfordium was unknown, and thus it has no traditional Latin name.

Before the name of a new element is formally adopted, the element is known by a "systematic element name" derived from the Latin names for the digits of its atomic number. In the case of Rutherfordium, atomic number 104, this was unnilquadium.
