Typically it is just a machine that doesn't do anything else but word processing. My grandfather had a huge desk/machine that was built only for word processing... it could store and save and print documents, but it had no other computer functions.
I suppose the term could also be applied to software that was designed for that singular use as well.
Originally the term encompassed all business equipment concerned with the handling of text. The term word processor came to represent stand-alone units.
Yes.
stand alone
5040 columns in a word processor
The word "sandbox" has two morphemes: "sand" and "box." "Sand" is a free morpheme, which can stand alone as a word, while "box" is a bound morpheme, which cannot stand alone.
When a root word is "locked," it means it cannot stand alone and needs affixes to form a complete word, like "ject" in "injection." When a root word is "free," it can stand alone as a complete word without needing affixes, like "book" in "bookstore."
They stand alone. Forever alone.
