What is a suburban area?

I believe suburban / suburb area means the low density residence area, around high density city centers. Like the city center has high block buildings and further from the center there's a suburb with smaller houses.

Suburbs are the small towns around a big city. As an example, Chicago has suburbs not only in Cook County, but in Lake, Dupage and Will Counties. Often these towns and cities are called bedroom communities because many people work in the big city, but commute to the smaller cities and towns by car or train. Suburbs sprang up after World War II. People came home after the war and wanted affordable housing with back yards for children to play.
