In academic writing, each paragraph should have a topic sentence - that is, a sentence, usually the first in the paragraph, that makes it clear to the reader what the topic of that particular paragraph is going to be. For example, if I were writing an essay about monkeys, and I wanted to write a paragraph about their mating behaviors, I would begin that paragraph with a topic sentence such as "The mating behaviors of monkeys are very important and they...etc."

Once you have determined the topic for a paragraph, you should make sure that the paragraph does NOT stray from that topic.

Similarly, you should make sure that the principle topic of each paragraph fits in with the idea of the entire essay.

Furthermore, I recommend checking the transitions between one paragraph and the next, so that the reader can understand the flow of ideas in your paper and see how the different topics are linked and fit together to form the general topic of the essay.
