Economics is a more rigorous major, which can lead to better opportunites - in fields such as accounting, business, finance (and even marketing!).
A marketing major is more limited in scope, not as rigrous, and will lead to fewer opportunities, particularly in this protracted economic downturn which the U.S. will probably be experiencing for the next several years.
But, ultimately, it is up to each individual to choose the major which he/she feels best suited to.

This mostly depends on your major and on the college you attend. If you are going to be any type of business major then the answer will be yes. However, for other majors that are unrelated to economics the class is often a gen ed requirement, but not always.
