Panther is not a compound word.
In ancient times, it was thought that the leopard was a hybrid between a lion and a panther. The Greek names for these two, leon and pardos gives us leopardos, and from there to leopard, through an old french version, 'leupart'.
The Chinese word for panther is "豹" (bào).
The word derives from Greek pan- "all" and ther"beast" or "theras" meaning "hunter" as they were seen to be an all-powerful beast (indeed, they were origianlly a mythical beast).
