36 (writing is not part of your composite score)
The ACT with Writing is exactly the same as the regular ACT, just with an essay administered at the end. This essay is scored but this score DOES NOT go into your ACT Composite score; it is separate.

The highest score on the ACT is a 36. This is comparable to a 2400 on the SAT. A score of 36 on each section of the four sections on the test means you answered every question correctly with up to two questions wrong on the reading section. Additionally, the average of the four sections can be rounded up (i.e. An average of 35.5 will round to 36).
In 1976, the highest composite score on the ACT was 36. This score represents a perfect performance across all sections of the test, which includes English, math, reading, and science. Achieving a composite score of 36 is a significant accomplishment, indicating exceptional academic ability.

An 8 is a decent score. It puts you within the top quarter of all scores for writing.
The average ACT score in the USA is a 21. The highest possible score on the ACT however is a 36. To get into a college like UCSD, the average seems to be like a 26-32. So a good score would probably be a 25-29 but a great score would be a 30-36!
