Local high school Quiz Bowl competitions are based on the original GE College Quiz Bowl that appeared on radio beginning in 1953 and on television from 1959 to 1970. Privately funded variations continue to be produced on a local, state, or regional basis.
The format has been adopted by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) which coordinates annual competitions, and in a different form by the Academic Competition Federation (ACF). At the high school level, each tournament is independently hosted by a high school or college, primarily using the format adopted by ACF, NAQT, or the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE).
