Mwalimu (pl., walimu). Unlike the English "teacher," mwalimu is used as a honorific in address: Where a teacher in America or Britain might be called Mr. Smith, in East Africa he would be Mwl. Smith.

Once a teacher you will be mwalimu for lifer. The founding father of Tanzania, Julius K. Nyerere, began his professional life as a teacher, and was forever after known as Mwl. Nyerere, an honorific of respect and admiration. This contributor has not taught for several decades but is still called mwalimu.
