The Tang Dynasty also saw many achievements in medicine and astronomy. The Tang Materia Medica was a famous book written about pharmaceutics. This was the first book of its kind anywhere in the world. Medical schools were opened, teaching students in specialized areas. In the field of astronomy, Monk Yixing was the first to scientifically measure the length of the sun's shadow and the altitude of the North Pole.
Much of the knowledge in these and other fields could be passed along thanks to the invention of block printing. This made it possible for more and more people to read. As a result, literacy rates soared, and lower-class citizens had a better chance of being able to pass the civil service examination.
Pharmaceutical book.
The Tang Materia Medica was not the first book on herbal medicines in China. The first known Chinese material medica is the Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, attributed to the mythical figure Shen Nong. The Tang Materia Medica, compiled during the Tang Dynasty, expanded on earlier works and included a wider range of medicinal substances.
