Military entrance is based on your AFQT which is a combination of 4 of the ASVAB tests - Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Math Knowledge and Arithmetic Reasoning. You score is compared to a nationally representative sample of 18-23 year olds. Your score is a percentile. For example an AFQT of 45 means that you scored as well a or better than 45% of the people in this nationally representative group of youth.

The services require an AFQT of 31, except for the Air Force which requires 36. In good recruiting times the services can be more selective, so you want to be sure to get your best score. You need to study and prepare for the test.

The most recommended study guide is McGraw-Hill's ASVAB which has a comprehensive review of the content areas found of the ASVAB, 4, full length practice tests, and lots of study tips. It also contains lots of information about each of the services, their requirements and career and training opportunities.
