Spelling is the formation of written words from their constituent alphabet forms. This includes letters as well as diacritics (accent, breve, umlaut) and punctuation marks (apostrophe, hyphen, tilde). Spelling provides a standard translation of spoken words into printed form, but in many cases will vary from fixed phonetic sounds for letters, letter pairs (digraphs) and letter groups. Words adopted from a different language may or may not have their spelling altered to reflect their pronunciation.
