In Texas, it would have to be the University of Texas at Austin. The majority of the student body are honors graduates from their respective high schools. Therefore, a student body composed of primarily honors graduates means two things: 1) UT is highly selective of its student body & 2) It makes it difficult for others who are not honors graduates to be accepted. This can be accounted for by the numerous people that rejected from this school and sent to the sister schools within the UT system.

UCLA turns away more applicants than any other university, public or private. Also, UCLA receives over 50,000 applications each year which again is more than any public or private school. UCLA's incoming freshman class each year averages over a 4.00 GPA (4.07 in 2010......best ever was in 2003 at 4.35 GPA) The University of California educational system is in a near tie with the Ivy League for getting a top rated education. UCLA's Basketball as well as most of it's nation leading championship sports teams (105 NCAA Team Championships) routinely have the highest GPAs of any university in the country. No matter how good you are at your sport, if you don't have exceptional grades, UCLA will not recruit you unlike Kentucky, Memphis and USC, each of which have some of the lowest GPAs on their sports teams and will do anything to get their players. Once UCLA gets a students transcripts and if they don't conform to UCLA standards the recruiter will notify the student that they will not be recruited to play their sport at UCLA. This means unless you have at least a 3.40GPA with exceptional "Extra Credit" work or 3.60GPA with not so exceptional "Extra Credit" work than you have no shot at becoming a Bruin! I had a 3.32GPA and was on the edge of not getting my Baseball scholarship, but I had a long list of community service along with school government programs I was involved in and I pulled off a 1385 SAT.
