Do you mean at home at night? I wouldn't have them work much past 7 or 8 pm. If a student comes home from school, takes a bit of break and eat something and then starts on homework before dinner he/she should be able to get it done. The measure is one hour of homework per subject. I always gave my students class time to do the work and anything they didn't have done they could take to study hall or home.
