You have to have graduated from a state-licensed barber or Cosmetology school and be at least 16 years old, to become licensed as a cosmetologist. It really varies from state to state though, as some states require that you've graduated from highschool (to enter a cosmetology school/become an actual cosmetologist), while others require as little as an eighth-grade graduation, and there are some that will allow completion of an apprenticeship as a substitute for graduation from a school.

It's different everywhere. You'd have a good chance getting information if you questioned your hairstylist, or manicurist, or anyone you know who has a profession in cosmetology and received it where you live, to see what they had to do.
