You should always describe your characters, in any story. It makes the reader care about them! Here are some ways to describe characters effectively:

  • Show them moving. You learn a lot by watching some act - how they gesture, what expressions do they have at different situations, how do they react to things. You can show if they are clumsy or graceful, quick or slow.
  • Show them through another character. Have the narrator describe other characters.
  • Show them through inner reflection. Have the character think about something like "my mousy brown hair" or "the big feet I inherited from my father."

Don't try that old cliche of looking in a mirror!
