There are many ways to describe a character in a book.

You can use personality traits to describe a character. For example, for a personality trait you could describe a person like this:

• Jon was a considerate, thoughtful boy but was often lacking faith in himself.

Notice this example. We already have two personality traits, both positive and negative. The lack of faith in self is the negative point and the considerate, thoughtful is the positive point.

Another technique to describing your character is to use appearance.

For example, appearance descriptions can be used like this:

• Kelly was a tall slim girl, with long copper colored hear that gleamed. She had a slightly pointed nose, and a jaw that went slightly to the right.

This technique is often used to describe a character.

However, writing is meant to be creative, and all techniques in describing characters are different.

You can use direct characterization, where you simply tell the reader "She was sad" or "He thought the cake was delicious." You can also use indirect characterization, where you show the reader by character actions and reactions and thoughts and emotions, such as "Tears rolled down her cheeks as she covered her face with her hands."
