Believe it or not, there was a time when nobody (kids and teens) didn't use backpacks. We stacked our books, notebooks, binders, from biggest to smallest, and carried them across one forearm. Sometimes the stack was so big, tall, and heavy, we had to wrap both forearms across the book or binder on the bottom of the pile, and push the top book/notebook up against our chests. In one hand, swung a paper bag with our lunch (lunch bag or "a poke" as paper bags were called). Now, kids use plastic bags. You could also use a canvas tote or oversized purse/bag.
