In the 1930s, and the beginning of last century, classrooms were run very strictly. Teachers were permitted to use corporal punishment and other disciplinary methods designed to shame children into supposedly doing better. Expectations on a teacher were far greater. They did their own cleaning of the classroom, and were expected to be at school very early to warm up the room with a fire in winter, for example. There were rules about what teachers could wear and who they could associate with outside of school.
