Laika was launched into space on November 3, 1957 aboard the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2. She became the first living creature to orbit the Earth.
Laika was a Soviet space dog who became the first animal to orbit the Earth aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft in 1957. She was launched into space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in present-day Kazakhstan. Unfortunately, Laika did not survive the mission, as the technology to safely return animals from space had not yet been developed.
The first dog to travel to space aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957, was named Laika. She was a Soviet space dog and became the first living creature to orbit Earth. Tragically, Laika did not survive the mission.

That was Sputnik 1 launched 4. oktober 1957 I suppose the name was "Sputnik" and then later when they sendt the next one, they became "Sputnik 1" and "Sputnik 2" regards.

Laika, aka Kudryavka, was a stray dog from the former Soviet Union who on November 3rd, 1957 became the first animal to be launched into space. Sadly, another first was achieved within a few hours, when Laika died, possibly of overheating due to faulty equipment.
The Jimmie Rodgers tune that was number one on the charts the week Sputnik 1 was launched was "Honeycomb." It became a popular hit and topped the charts in 1957.
Laika is Russian - literally - for "barker"!! The Soviet Union launched a dog named "Laika" into space aboard the Sputnik 2 space capsule. Laika is also the name for a type of hunting dog. There are three breeds - the Russian European Laika, the East Siberian Laika and the West Siberian Laika. Note that Laika, the dog that went to space, is in fact a mongrel.
