Between 1830 and 1860 life under slavery became even more difficult because the slave codes -- the laws in the Southern states that controlled enslaved people --became more severe. In existence since the 1700's slave codes aimed to prevent the event white Southerners dreaded most-- the slave rebellion. For this reason slave codes prohibited slaves from assembling in large groups and from leaving their master's property without a written pass.
Slave codes also made it a crime to teach enslaved people to read or write. White Southerners feared that a literate slave might lead other African Americans in rebellion. A slave who did not know how to read and write, whites believed, was less likely to rebel.
Slave codes
Slave Codes were sets of laws during the colonial period and/or in individual states after the American Revolution, which defined the status of slaves and the rights and responsibilities of slave owners.

The important document that sets forth the laws of the United States is the Constitution. Adopted in 1787, it establishes the framework for the federal government, delineates the separation of powers, and outlines the rights of citizens. Additionally, it serves as the supreme law of the land, guiding all legislative and judicial actions. Amendments, such as the Bill of Rights, further expand and protect individual freedoms.
In the US, the US Constitution sets the rules for protecting citizen rights. State constitutions do the same with regard to state laws and their effect on citizens. Individual local laws are designed to protect citizen rights as well.

Jim Crow laws and the Fugitive Slave Acts both reinforced systemic racial discrimination and upheld white supremacy in the United States. Jim Crow laws institutionalized racial segregation and disenfranchised African Americans in the post-Reconstruction South. Similarly, the Fugitive Slave Acts mandated the return of escaped enslaved individuals to their owners, criminalizing their freedom and denying them basic rights. Both sets of laws reflected and perpetuated the societal norms of racism and inequality during their respective periods.
The Constitution protects freedom in many ways. here are three ways.It sets up a fair form of government. You can't be free without justice. It sets up rules for the government to work within by creating boundaries for state government laws and federal government laws (see the 10th amendment). The Bill of Rights outlines freedom and rights preserved for the individual (some have previously argued that this is the only part of the constitution that protects individual rights).
