Most of the time it's between sophmore and junior year, the junior year is when you hear a lot about colleges and go on tours and start looking. Colleges look at all your records from all your years of high school. They take interest in your SAT and ACT in your junior and senior years. So you should do well in all 4 years of high school. The two most important years are sophomore and junior years. These are the two years you ABSOLUTELY can NOT mess up. However, the colleges look at your cumalitive GPA and your rank in class. So really, you shouldn't mess up in any of the 4 years. Just do your best all four years, and you'll do fine.
High school sophomore and up would be a good time to start looking at colleges.
Chances are you will need to get a student loan. There are no free colleges online. Start by getting a student loan, and then look at online colleges in your area.
