In the largest terms, assignments come from the curriculum, or set course of study for a class or group of classes. In practical terms, some school districts have very tight curricula in which every lesson and every assignment is predetermined. The teachers in such districts have little choice when they give assignments; the result of teaching is a certain outcome, so the assignment must be a certain assignment. Some school districts have a looser approach; the curriculum offers some leeway in teacher choice of assignments. Either way, the assignments are generally some reflection of the overall purpose of a class or a group of classes, and this is generally decided by a large group of people, sometimes on a local level, but often on a state or national level, and this decision is ratified by an oversight board, like a board of school directors.
